Day68

GIORNO 68

Questa mattina faccio Skype con la mia famiglia, e mi piace molto molto parlare con loro (non siate gelosi, ma la mia mezz'oretta con la Franci vale di più di ogni altro momento nella giornata!!!).
Poi per pranzo Gary prepara hamburger alla griglia: sembrerà inverosimile, ma è il primo che mangio da quando sono negli States (era ora!).
Dopodichè vado in ospedale per il mio primo giorno come volontaria: mi danno un badge/pass e una maglietta, e poi inizio con Emily e Sarah. 
I sorrisi e le chiacchierate con i pazienti sono due degli aspetti più gratificanti di questa attività: è un sogno che diventa realtà e che mi rende davvero felice.
Poi passiamo da Will, con Briana, Ann e Barbara: la settimana prossima una nuova inquilina si trasferirà nella loro casa e gli uomini si devono preparare. La parte più divertente arriva quando Briana, guardandosi attorno, dice: "Will, mi sa proprio che dovrò investire una intera giornata per aiutarti!".
Dopo cena, passeggiata con Barbara, Skype con Beppi e poi nanna!

DAY 68

This morning I Skype with my family, and I like to talk to them very much (do not be jealous, but my half hour with my Francesca is worth more than any other time in the day!!!).
Then for lunch, Gary prepares grilled burger: it will seem far-fetched, but this is the first that I ate since I've been in the States (finally!).
Then I go to the hospital for my first day as a volunteer: I am given a badge/pass and a T-shirt, and then I start with Emily and Sarah. 
The smiles and chats with patients are two of the most rewarding aspects of this activity: it is a dream coming true, and it makes me really happy.
Then we stop by Will, with Briana, Ann and Barbara: next week a new girl will move into their home and the men must prepare for that. The fun part comes when Briana, while looking around, says: "Will, I guess I'll have to invest a whole day to help you!".
After dinner, Barbara and I go for a walk, I Skype with Beppi and then to sleep!

GIORNO 49

Giornata piena oggi! A scuola tutto bene, cross country tosto, controllo eventuali reazioni per la tubercolosi in ospedale (negativo), poi partita di pallavolo dove Barbara è cheerleader!!
Stanchissima ma contentissima, ora vado a dormire.

DAY 49

Today it's a full day! At school everything is all right and cross country is hard. I go to the hospital to check the possible reaction for the Tuberculosis (negative) and then I go to see the volleyball match where Barbara cheers!!
Very tired but very happy, now I go to sleep.

Day45

GIORNO 45

Per pranzo mangiamo pasta con pesto (gnam gnam), poi test di Modern America e Anatomia.
Ann ci viene a prendere da scuola, andiamo a casa e poi usciamo per andare in ospedale: devo fare l'antiinfluenzale, la seconda dose di anti-tubercolosi e un prelievo di sangue per verificare che io sia immune a tutto il resto dei requisiti. L'infermiera è una delle persone più gentili che io abbia incontrato qui!
Poi Ann ci lascia in piscina: Barbara si rilassa un po', stando nella vasca idromassaggio, mentre io metto a dura prova le mie capacità sportive: faccio una mezz'ora di tapis-roulant ascoltando la musica, e poi 40 vasche di nuoto. Stay strong.
Ann e Gary intanto sono al festival scolastico di Justin.
Barbara ed io andiamo in un ristorante, "Mo Betta Gumbo", dove la cucina è Creola (della Luisiana): prendiamo il piatto della casa, con riso, salsiccia, pollo, zuppa speziata, verdure e pane di grano e, cosa possiamo dire, se non che era forse il miglior piatto che abbiamo assaggiato fin'ora?!
Poi entriamo nel Cafe Tree per un Chai tea (Barbara) e una piccola cioccolata calda (io).
Facciamo una passeggiata per le vie della città, parliamo tanto e di tutto e poi torniamo casa con Ann e Gary!

DAY 45

For lunch we eat pasta with pesto (yum yum), then I have Modern America and Anatomy tests.
Ann picks us up from school, we go home and then get out to go to the hospital: I do flu shot, the second dose of anti-tuberculosis and a blood test to check if I am immune to the rest of the requirements. The nurse is one of the friendliest people I've met here!
Ann then leaves us at the pool: Barbara relaxes a bit, standing in the hydro-massage pool, while I test my sports skills: I do half an hour of treadmill listening to music, and then 40 swimming laps. Stay strong.
Meanwhile, Ann and Gary are at Justin's school festival.
Barbara and I go to a restaurant, "Mo Betta Gumbo", where the cuisine is Creole (Louisiana): take the dish of the house, with rice, sausage, chicken, spicy soup, vegetables and corn bread and, what can we say , except that it was probably the best dish we have ever tasted so far ?!
Then we go into the Tree Cafe for a Chai tea (Barbara) and a small hot chocolate (me).
We walk through the streets of the city, we talk a lot, about everything, and then go back home with Ann and Gary!

Day36

GIORNO 36

Durante la classe di Computer Graphics creiamo un logo con la scritta "Flashback productions" usando AdobeIllustrator, e mi diverto un sacco a provare tutti gli strumenti che sono disponibili. Molto probabilmente venerdì continuerò, questa volta disegnando un logo a mio piacere, e sarà proprio quello del blog!!!
Poi nella classe di tedesco impariamo a coniugare il passato dei verbi e facciamo una ricerca sull'Oktoberfest a Monaco che inizierà sabato 19: vorrei tanto andarci, sembra davvero caratteristico!!
Poi esco prima da scuola per andare all'incontro obbligatorio in ospedale: prima di entrare nella sala dove ci sarà la riuniune, prendo un caffè mocha e leggo qualche pagina del libro "Complications" che mi aveva regalato Ann qualche settimana fa.
La riunione è molto interessante e un video in particolare mi colpisce: posterò qui sotto il link, vale la pena di guardarlo!
Torno a casa, preparo insalata di verdure (spinaci, cetrioli, lattuga, carote e peperoni) e insalata di frutta (con mela, mandarini, noci, uva e yogurt).
Will viene per cena e sono molto contenta che ci sia anche lui con noi :)
Poi faccio la doccia, leggo un po', faccio una passeggiata e vado a dormire!

DAY 36

During the Computer Graphics class we create a logo for "Flashback productions" using AdobeIllustrator, and I enjoy trying out all the tools that are available. I will probably continue on Friday, this time drawing a logo of my choosing, and it will be just the logo for this blog!!!
Then, in the German class we learn to conjugate the conversation past of verbs and do a research about the Oktoberfest in Munich that will start on Saturday 19th: I'd love to go there, it looks really typical!!
Then I leave school early to go to the mandatory meeting at the hospital: before entering the room, I buy a cafe mocha and I read a few pages of the book "Complications" that Ann gave me some weeks ago.
The meeting was very interesting and a video in particular strikes me: I will post the link below, it is worth watching!
I come home, I prepare vegetable salad (spinach, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots and peppers) and fruit salad (with apples, tangerines, walnuts, grapes and yogurt).
Will comes for dinner and I am very glad that he is he with us :)

Then I have a shower, I read a bit, I take a walk and go to sleep!

Day35

GIORNO 35

Scuola tutto a posto, oggi allenamento più leggeri (per fortuna!) e poi serata tranquilla!
Mi chiamano dall'ospedale e mi dicono che sono stata accettata: vorrei saltare dalla gioia!!! Domani avremo un incontro sulla sicurezza e ci spiegheranno meglio i nostri compiti. Non vedo l'ora di iniziare.

DAY 35

School is all right, lighter workout today (thankfully!) and then quiet evening!
They call me from the hospital and they tell me that I was accepted into the program: I would jump for joy!!! Tomorrow we will have a meeting about security and they will explain us more about our tasks. Can't wait to start.

Una delle regole in ospedale è che non possiamo indossare jeans, quindi comprerò gli Scrubs, "tute" mediche, proprio come in Grey's Anatomy!!!
One of the hospital's rules is that we can not wear jeans, so I'll buy a Scrub, excactly as in Grey's Anatomy!!!

Day28

GIORNO 28

In mattinata Ann e Gary ci fanno quella che è la sorpresa più grande che io abbia mai ricevuto. 
Partiamo in macchina verso Denver, e dopo circa 1 ora arriviamo a destinazione: indoor skydiving!
Non potete immaginare l'adrenalina, l'emozione e il senso di gratitudine che ho provato nei loro confronti. 
Un istruttore ci affianca per tutta la durata del "viaggio nello spazio", e sorrido quando mia mamma, vedendo le foto, mi dice che sembro Samanta Cristoforetti!
Quando sei all'interno della cappa non senti nulla, soltanto brividi che attraversano tutto il tuo corpo: sei felice, rilassato... libero!
GRAZIE.
Nel pomeriggio andiamo all'Ikea, e mi sembra di essere di nuovo in Europa: il negozio è progettato esattamente come quelli che trovo in Italia, e, camminando qua e là, riconosco persino certi articoli che abbiamo in casa (identici!).
Poi Cross Country, oggi tosto, doccia e cena.
Nella giornata ho anche ricevuto una chiamata dall'ospedale dove vorrei diventare volontaria (https://www.bannerhealth.com/Locations/Colorado/McKee+Medical+Center/_McKee+Medical+Center+Home.htm) e sono davvero felice quando mi dicono che ho passato il primo step e che ora devo fare il colloquio (giovedì o venerdì!!!!). Incrociamo le dita!

DAY 28

In the morning Ann and Gary make us what is the biggest surprise I've ever received.
We start driving to Denver, and after about one hour we reach our destination: indoor skydiving!
You can not imagine the adrenaline, the excitement and the sense of gratitude that I felt towards them.
An instructor stayed with us for the whole duration of the "journey in the space", and I smiled when my mom, seeing the pictures, said that I look like Samanta Cristoforetti (the first Italian lady going to space)!
When you're inside the hood, you do not feel anything, you just feel shivers running through your whole body, and you are happy, relaxed ... free!

In the afternoon we go to Ikea, and I feel like I'm back in Europe: the store is designed exactly like the ones that I find in Italy, and, walking here and there, I even recognize some items that we have at my house (identical!).
Then Cross Country, today hard, shower and dinner.
During the day, I also received a call from the hospital where I'd like to become a volunteer (https://www.bannerhealth.com/Locations/Colorado/McKee+Medical+Center/_McKee+Medical+Center+Home.htm) and I'm really happy thinking about the interview I'll have to tatke (on Thursday or Friday !!!!). Keep your fingers crossed for me!
