Il destino vuole che io non giochi a tennis... Acqua Zumba è divertente, anche se non è facile riprodurre i passi e andare allo stesso ritmo della ragazza-istruttrice all'esterno, ma dura soltanto 20 minuti e poi facciamo un workout più serio, con pesetti e tavolette, e penso a mia mamma, che fa la stessa cosa tutte le settimane: posso solo farti i complimenti!
The fate has it that I do not play tennis... Aqua Zumba is fun, although it is not easy to follow the steps and go at the same pace of the girl-instructor outside of the water, but it only lasts 20 minutes and then we do a more serious workout with small weights and kick-boards, and I think about my mom, who does the same thing every week: I can only compliment you!

Durante l'ora di cucina prepariamo i pretzels: questo è il laboratorio che ho apprezzato di più, perchè riguardante una delle mie passioni, impastare! Decido di fare una treccia, e sembra promettere bene...
During the cooking class, we prepare pretzels: this is the lab that I liked the most, because it's about one of my passions, kneading! I decide to make a braid, and it looks promising...

Durante anatomia, impariamo a misurare la pressione sanguigna (cosa che avevo già fatto quest'estate all'Ospedale San Raffaele e che avevo provato a praticare con mia mamma), e a leggere un elettrocardiogramma.
Sono proprio entusiasta di questa classe!!
During anatomy, we learn how to measure blood pressure (which is something I already did this summer in Milan and that I tried to practice on my mom), and to read an EKG.
I'm very enthusiast about this class!!

Nel pomeriggio faccio una lunga doccia, metto a posto la camera, rifaccio il letto, faccio la lavatrice, e poi mi rilasso sul divano con Ann e Barbara (Gary è ad allenare con Will), mangiando la cena e guardando il divertente film "White Chicks"!

In the afternoon I take a long shower, I tidy up my room, remake my bed, do the laundry (well, a productive afternoon), and then I relax on the couch with Ann and Barbara (Gary is coaching with Will), while having dinner and watching the fun movie "White Chicks"!

Oggi è lunedì, e per definizione il lunedì è la giornata del risveglio difficile. C'è però un incentivo, che rende il tutto più sopportabile: sabato mattina partiamo per Las Vegas!! Quindi, invece che pensare alla "lunga" settimana che mi aspetta, inizio a fare il conto alla rovescia!

Today is Monday, and by definition, Monday is the day of the hard awakening. However, there is an incentive that makes everything more bearable: Saturday morning we leave for Las Vegas!! So, rather than thinking about the "long" week that's waiting for me, I start to do the countdown!

Dopo un'avventura poco piacevole nello Starbucks all'intero di Kingsoopers durante il pranzo (barista così maleducata che non ci tornerò più!), mi godo il mio caffè durante l'ora di tedesco: facciamo una listening difficile, ma poi guardiamo video poco probabili per i restanti venti minuti di lezione. Mia mamma ha detto proprio la cosa giusta: "Goditela finchè puoi Chiara!"

After an unpleasant adventure in the Starbucks inside Kingsoopers during lunch (the barista was so rude that I will not go back there anymore!), I enjoy my coffee during the German class: we make a difficult listening, but then we watch funny videos for the remaining twenty minutes of lesson.
My mom said exactly the right thing: "Chiara, enjoy it while you can!"

Uno dei video ha come protagonisti dei gatti che si graffiano a vicenda e che cantano una canzone sulla cucina. Non penso ci sia bisogno di commenti ahahah!
One of the videos has cats as protagonists, while they scratch each others and sing a cooking song. I think it's pretty much self-explanatory ahahah!

Oggi gioco a tennis finalmente! Ammetto di aver perso tante partite, ma non importa perchè mi sono divertita e penso di aver imparato qualcosa di nuovo. Poi vado a fare una lunga corsa di circa 40 minuti, e torno indietro quando Barbara mi chiama per dirmi che ha finito con il teatro!

Today I finally play tennis! I admit I lost a lot of games, but it doesn't matter because I enjoyed it and I think I've learned something new. Then I go for a long run for about 40 minutes, and come back when Barbara calls me to tell me that she's done with the theater!

It always feels nice to workout (in the end at least)!

E poi, Qdoba con Barbara! Dopo divertenti avventure con la squadra di baseball e tante risate, ci dirigiamo verso Starbucks!
And then, Qdoba with Barbara! After very fun adventures with the baseball team and lots of laughs, we head to Starbucks!

Kid's Meal: perfect size for me!

Una volta a Starbucks, possiamo dire con orgoglio di essere ormai le "boss" della situazione, perchè una delle bariste (le conosciamo tutte, ovviamente) viene al nostro tavolo e ci porta una brioche al cioccolato. Ok, la lascio a Barbara perchè per una volta vorrei tentare di essere seria circa la perdita di kg accumulati, ma il gesto è davvero davvero dolce (e Starbucks recupera i punti persi in mattinata -- anche se era un altro negozio...)!!

Once at Starbucks, we can proudly say that we are now the "bosses" of the situation, because one of the baristas (we know them all, of course) comes to our table and brings us a chocolate croissant. Ok, I leave it all to Barbara because I'd like to be serious about the weight loss for once, but the gesture is really really sweet (and Starbucks recovers the points lost in the morning - even though it was another store...) !!

Battute simpatiche che il prof proietta alla lavagna, ma che non capisco immediatamente, così vado da lui e me le spiega!

A scuola facciamo una specie di "test attitudinale", e queste sono le tre parole che mi escono come risultato per descrivermi: diciamo che per essere solo un computer, ci ha azzeccato non poco...

At school we take a kind of "aptitude tests", and these are the three words that come to me as a result to describe me: let's say that, despite being just a computer, it did quite a good job...

Ann mi viene a prendere dopo scuola e andiamo a berci un caffè al bar caratteristico vicino alla scuola, "The Muse". Lei prende una mocha classica, mentre io prendo quella alla ciliegia: gliela faccio assaggiare, perchè penso davvero che sia una bomba, e lei sembra concordare pienamente, perchè mi dice entusiasta che la prossima volta che andrà lì ordinerà la stessa!
Ann picks me up after school and we go for a coffee at the unique bar next to the school, "The Muse". She takes a classic mocha, while I take the "cherry bon bon": I make her taste it, because I really think it's a bomb, and she seems to fully agree with me, because she tells me enthusiastically that she will order the same one the next time she goes there!

...E poi le insegno a fare i cantucci, i suoi biscotti preferiti. Lei prende nota di tutto quello che facciamo, e mi viene da sorridere quando mi dice che non ha mai usato la bilancia per misurare gli ingredienti: mi sembra di tornare all'inizio dell'anno, quando ero io che ho dovuto usare cups o tablespoons per la prima volta nella mia vita!
Un lieve senso di nostalgia mi attraversa, perchè le sto insegnando a fare qualcosa che tra due mesi non sarò più qui a fare, ma d'altra parte sono contenta, perchè mi ricorderà ogni volta che preparerà e mangerà queste delizie italiane; E' la miglior eredità che posso lasciare qui...

... And then I teach her how to make cantucci, her favorite biscotti. She takes note of everything we do, and it makes me smile when she tells me that she has never used the scale to measure ingredients before: I seem to go back to the beginning of the year, when I was the one who had to use cups or tablespoons for the first time in my life!
A slight sense of nostalgia passes through me, because I'm teaching her to do something that in two months I will not be here to do, but, on the other hand, I'm happy, because she'll remember me every time she prepares and eats these Italian treats; and this is the best legacy I can leave here...

Mentre i biscotti stanno cuocendo, ricevo una telefonata per FaceTime da un numero sconosciuto. Sono un po' turbata e incuriosita allo stesso tempo, così rispondo puntando la telecamera al soffitto: non voglio mostrare la mia faccia, ma voglio prima vedere di chi si tratta. Ed è con ESTREMA sorpresa che vedo il viso di Gaetano, che ha deciso di chiamarmi tanto per chiacchierare e aggiornarci. Mi dice anche che c'è un'altra sorpresa con lui, Federica! Che piacere ragazzi, mi mancate tanto, ma mi avete fatto la giornata oggi!!!

While biscotti are baking, I get a FaceTime call from an unknown number. I'm a bit disturbed and intrigued at the same time, so I answer by pointing the camera to the ceiling: I will not show my face, but I want to see who it is. And it is with EXTREME surprise that I see Gaetano's face, who decided to call me just to chat and update each others. He also said that there is another surprise with him, Federica! What a pleasure guys, I miss you so much, but you have made my day today!!!

Una volta a casa, guardo un episodio di Grey's Antomy con Ann, che oggi è particolarmente bello e intrigante, e poi scrivo il blog mentre Ann e Gary guardano House of Cards (che però io non seguo troppo, essendo il linguaggio politico complicato e non avendo mai seguito le stagioni precedenti!).

Poi vado a nanna perchè è venerdì e sono stanca:

mi sento di dire grazie a tutte le persone che ogni giorno rendono la mia vita Americana così bella e piena, che, fosse per me, non la lascerei più. Mi rimangono qualcosa come 70 giorni qui, e mi viene letteralmente da piangere a pensarci, ma cerco di guardare solo al lato positivo: sono una ragazza FORTUNATA, ho costruito una nuova vita qui, ho conosciuto persone stupende, e l'unica cosa che voglio fare ora è godere di tutto il bello che mi si presenterà, divertirmi ed essere spensierata.

Once home, I watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy with Ann, which today is especially good and intriguing, and then I write the blog while Ann and Gary watch House of Cards (that I do not follow, because of the complicated political terms and not having followed the previous seasons myself!).

Then I go to bed because it's Friday and I'm tired:

I would say thank you to all the people who make my American life so beautiful and full every day: if it was for me, I would never leave all this. I have something like 70 days left here, and I literally want to cry then I think about it, but I try to only look at the positive side: I am a LUCKY girl, I built a new life here, I met wonderful people, and the only thing I want to do now is to enjoy all the beauty that will be presented to me, have fun and be carefree.

Oggi gambe durante sollevamento pesi: si diventa forti, piano piano...

Non so, oggi sono proprio felice... Ho dovuto prendere una bustina di antidolorifico, perchè avevo mal di testa (ieri ho preso tanto freddo a tennis, e poi, quando sono andata a letto, ho sentito che la mia amica sinusite si stava facendo sentire...), ed è stato divertente, perchè ero nell'ora di Storia con Matt e Mike, e non sapevo dove trovare un bicchiere per mischiare la polverina all'acqua. Ci è venuto in soccorso il prof, dicendo che il modo migliore era usare la bottiglia dell'acqua: ho seguito il consiglio, ma non appena ho iniziato ad agitare la bottiglia, la soluzione è diventata molto spumosa e sembrava fosse sul punto di esplodere. Questi due fratelli gemelli birichini continuavano a prendermi in giro, e io non riuscivo ad essere seria, quindi mi sono allontanata e mi sono nascosta dietro al prof per mandare giù quel miscuglio poco piacevole. La loro domanda è stata: "Ma perchè non usi una pastiglia, veloce e indolore?" E io: "Mah, sarà anche più comoda, ma queste bustine arrivano direttamente dall'Italia, non ci sono eguali...!"
Morale della storia, la medicina funziona e sono nel pieno delle mie forze per il resto della giornata!
I do not know why, but today I'm really happy... I had to take a painkiller (ibuprofen), because I had a headache (yesterday I got very cold in tennis, and then when I went to bed, I heard that my friend sinusitis was coming back...), and it was fun, because I was in the Modern America hour with Matt and Mike, and I did not know where to find a glass to mix the powder with water. The teacher saved us, saying that the best way was to use the water bottle: I followed the advice, but as soon as I started to shake the bottle, the solution became very frothy and seemed about to explode. These two mischievous twin brothers continued to tease me, and I could not be serious, so I moved away and I hid behind the prof to drink down that unpleasant mixture. Their question was: "But why don't you use a tablet instead, fast and painless?" I said, 'Well, it would certainly be more convenient, but these bags come from Italy, and there are no equals...! "Moral of the story, the medicine worked and I am in full strength for the rest of the day!

Ho ridotto la quantità di Starbucks in una settimana, perchè era probabilmente esagerata, ma oggi mi concedo una mocha e sono così avida che mi brucio le papille non appena la sorseggio (è ancora bollente...). E' sempre un piacere gustarla, e mi dà una carica speciale prima dell'allenamento di tennis!
I reduced the amount of Starbucks in a week, because it was probably exaggerated, but today I allow myself a mocha and I'm so greedy that I burn the taste buds on my tongue as soon as I sip it (it's still very hot...). It 's always a pleasure to enjoy it, and it gives me a special charge before the tennis practice!

A cominciare da giovedì, ci divideremo in Junior Varsity e Varsity per gli allenamenti, dato che siamo troppe ragazze. Io, ovviamente sono nella Junior Varsity (squadra più "scarsa"), e siamo fortunate, perchè gli allenamenti saranno dalle 3.15 alle 4.45 per noi (invece che dalle 4 alle 6, per la squadra Varsity). Oggi giochiamo e sono così contenta di riuscire a colpire la palla per più di una volta consecutiva: so che può sembrare stupido, ma è una grande soddisfazione per me!

E, Gary, questa mattina, mi dà la notizia della giornata... Sabato notte c'è il cambio dell'ora, e le giornate saranno più lunghe! Quale modo migliore per iniziare la giornata?!

Beginning on Thursday, we will divide in Junior Varsity and Varsity for the practices, since we are too many girls. I obviously am in the Junior Varsity, and we are lucky, because the practices will be from 3.15 to 4.45 for us (instead of 4 to 6, for the Varsity team). Today we play and I'm so happy to be able to hit the ball for more than once in a row: I know it sounds silly, but it is a great satisfaction for me!

And, Gary, this morning, gives me the news of the day... Saturday night is the time change, and the days will be longer! What better way to start the day?!

Oggi vi spiego come ho invitato un ragazzo al prossimo ballo della scuola...

Today I will explain you how I invited a guy to the next school dance...

Tutto è iniziato ieri sera, quando ho trovato il coraggio, che cercavo da tanto, per invitare Matt, un amico specials che ho conosciuto subito, all'inizio dell'esperienza. Nel primo semestre abbiamo avuto le classi di inglese e modern america insieme, e siamo anche entrambi nello Student council, mentre in questo nuovo semestre siamo nella stessa classe di modern america e abbiamo la stessa ora buca alla fine della giornata. Ci siamo conosciuti di più in questi ultimi mesi, e ho sempre apprezzato i momenti che abbiamo passato insieme, ridendo e scherzando. Sarà una serata bellissima, lo so già!
It all started last night, when I finally found the courage to invite Matt, a special friend that I met right at the beginning of the experience. In the first semester, we had the English and modern america classes together, and we are both in the Student council, while in this new semester we are in the same modern America class and we have the same off hour at the end of the day. We got to know each other more in these past months, and I have always enjoyed the moments we spent together, laughing and joking. It will be a beautiful evening, I already know!

Durante l'ora di modern america, partecipiamo ad un progetto al computer (siamo nello stesso gruppo), e ad un certo punto mi allontano dal laboratorio, torno in classe, apro una tasca laterale del suo zaino, e ci infilo il pacchetto che ho preparato per lui. Dopodichè torno al computer come se niente fosse. Quando l'ora finisce, faccio il test di anatomia (che fra l'altro va molto bene - 75/60, guadagno i punti extra - e sono soddisfatta), e poi vado da Starbucks, da dove gli mando questo snapchat.
E la sua risposta è... "Of course I'll go with you!"
During the modern America class, we participate in a computer project (we are in the same group), and at some point I walk away from the lab, go back to class, open a side pocket of his backpack, and there I put the package I prepared for him. Then I go back to the computer as if nothing happened. When the hour is over, I do the anatomy test (which is very good - 75/60, getting the extra points - and I'm satisfied), and then I go to Starbucks, from where I send him this Snapchat.
His answer is... "Of course I'll go with you!"

Per cena, Gary prepara un petto di pollo buonissimo, insieme a riso, quinoa e carote, e vediamo Will di nuovo, dopo tante settimane. Dopo mangiato, Barbara ed io andiamo a fare una lunga passeggiata, durante la quale chiacchieriamo di tutte le belle cose che sono successe durante la giornata. Poi arriva Ann, con Justin ed Elora, che dormiranno qui stanotte. Justin costruisce un tavolo di carta e mi chiede: "Se riesco a finirlo, posso essere il boss?". Ebbene sì Justin, una volta che vedo l'opera completa, te lo devo proprio concedere: "Congratulazioni boss!!"

For dinner, Gary prepares a delicious chicken breast, along with rice, quinoa and carrots, and we see Will again, after so many weeks. After dinner, Barbara and I take a long walk, during which we talk of all the good things that happened during the day. Then Ann gets home with Justin and Elora, who will sleep here tonight. Justin builds a paper table and asks me: "If I can finish it, I can be the boss?". Yes Justin, once I see the complete work, I really have to give you this: "Congratulations boss!!"

Nell'ora buca vado a farmi un trattamento ai capelli: la parrucchiera me li lava, massaggia, e applica dei prodotti per renderli soffici, forti e sani. Devo dire che sono stata molto noncurante dei miei capelli ultimamente, ma Ann e Gary mi hanno regalato questo buono a Natale e, specialmente dopo il sole e sale delle Hawaii, i miei capelli mi ringraziano dell'attenzione che finalmente ho dato loro!
During the off hour I go to get a hair treatment: the hairdresser washes, massages, and applies products to make my hair soft, strong and healthy. I must say that I have been very careless about my hair lately, but Ann and Gary gave me this present for  Christmas and, especially after the sun and salt of Hawaii, my hair thanks me for the attention that I finally gave to it!

Starbucks ha lanciato il nuovo Flat White Latte, che altro non è che un normale cappuccino, così mi faccio preparare un assaggio gratis. Bene bene.

Mentre sono a Starbucks incontro Kathy, che segue tutti i miei snapchat tramite sua figlia Rebecca, e che quindi sapeva tutto quello che ho fatto ieri, e Debbie, un'altra barista amica di Ann, che ama l'Italia e che ha scoperto un posto nelle Dolomiti dove vuole assolutamente andare. Caso vuole che questo posto siano proprio le Odle in Val di Funes, dove la mia famiglia ed io andiamo tutte le estati da quando siamo nati.

In questo caso mi sento proprio di dire... "Come è piccolo il mondo!"

While I'm at Starbucks, I meet Kathy, who follows all my Snapchats through her daughter Rebecca, and so she knew everything I did yesterday, and Debbie, another barista who is Ann's friend, who loves Italy and who discovered a place in the Dolomites where she absolutely wants to go. It just so happens that this place is Odle in Val di Funes, where my family and I go every summer since we were born.

In this case I would just say ... "It's a small world!"

Per cena, Gary prepara purè di patate, mais e pollo impanato al forno: che chef! Domani partirà per andare a Los Angeles, e in casa ci saranno solo donne per cinque giorni...

Questa sera Ann è fuori a mangiare con Will, per la loro serata di San Valentino, e Gary ed io scommettiamo su quale ristorante abbiano scelto: io punto su Mo Betta Gumbo, perchè mi ricordo che, quando ci eravamo andati insieme, a Will era piaciuto molto, mentre Gary dice Carino's, il ristorante Italiano.

Chi vincerà?!

Scriviamo un messaggio a Will per chiedere dove abbiano mangiato e, quando risponde, scopro di aver... Perso. Ma non solo ho perso, Gary ha vinto, perchè di tutti i ristoranti della zona, hanno scelto proprio quello a cui aveva pensato Gary...

Ok Gary, li conosci molto meglio tu di me, sarà per la prossima volta!

In the afternoon, I go for a walk in the neighborhood, before the sun goes down and it starts to chill.

For dinner, Gary prepares mashed potatoes, corn and crispy chicken: what a chef! Tomorrow he will go to Los Angeles, and in the house there will be only women for 5 days...

Tonight Ann is out to dinner with Will, for their Valentine's night out, and Gary and I bet on which restaurant they chose: I say Mo Betta Gumbo, because I remember that when we went together, Will enjoyed it a lot, while Gary says Carino's, the Italian restaurant. Who will win?!

We write a text to Will to ask them where they ate and, when he replies, I find that I have... Lost. But not only have I lost, Gary has won, because of all the restaurants in the area, they chose just what Gary had thought of...

Okay Gary, you know them much better than I do, it will be for next time!

Oggi mi scrive la mia mami, che ha contattato l'hotel dove trascorreremo una notte io e lei soltanto, il primo weekend dopo il mio ritorno a casa. Avevamo già scelto il posto (http://www.villabelvederehotel.it/) sul lago Maggiore, ma ora la domanda era: letto matrimoniale o letti singoli? E la mia risposta è:

"Non ci vediamo da un anno, secondo te?"

Today my mommy wrote me, as she contacted the hotel where we will spend one night, just the two of us, the first weekend after my return home. We had already chosen the place (http://www.villabelvederehotel.it/en) on Lake Maggiore, but now the question was: double or single beds? And my answer is:

"We have not seen each other for a year, so what do you think?"

E' una tradizione di famiglia che avevo interrotto nelle sere invernali, perchè il gelo bloccava gli arti, ma ora che c'è un pochino più di luce e fa decisamente meno freddo, penso non ci siano più scuse: voglio riprendere a camminare dopo cena tutti i giorni, perchè è qualcosa che mi fa sentire proprio bene!

Night landscape.
After dinner, I go for a 25-minute walk, while listening to music from my iPod. It's a family tradition that I had stopped in the winter evenings, because the cold blocked my limbs, but now that there's a little more light and much less cold, I think there are no more excuses: I want to walk again after dinner every day, because it is something that makes me feel very good!
