Premio classe più divertente della giornata: tedesco. Oggi passiamo 47 minuti di lezione a cantare questa canzoncina, battendo le mani a ritmo. Si chiama "Bache Bache Kuchen", e posso solo dire di dedicare 1 minuto della vostra vita per ascoltarla. Se lo fate, cercate di immaginare il contesto: scuola superiore, lunedì mattina. Nel pomeriggio, camminata corsa nei campi, dato che il sole splende, ci sono circa 20 °C, e ho bisogno di staccare un po': è stato un lungo lunedì, e sono contenta che sia sera e si stia concludendo!

In the afternoon, I go for a walk and run in the fields, since the sun is shining, there are about 70°F, and I need to blow off steam: it was a long Monday and I'm glad it's evening and it's ending!

Stamattina ero così eccitata per la mia prima partita di tennis, ma mentre ero in classe ho aperto questa mail dal coach, che ci dice che è stata annullata a causa della neve. Che tristezza!
This morning, I was so excited for my first tennis match, but while I was in class, I open this email from the coach, who tells us that it was canceled due to the snow. How sad!

Oggi durante calculus mi devo proprio spremere le meningi per riuscire a risolvere questi problemi!
Today, during my calculus class, I really squeeze my brain to be able to solve these problems!

Ed è ancora neve. Colorado abbi pietà!
And it is snow again. Colorado have mercy!

Avendo l'ora buca all'ultima ora e non dovendomi fermare a scuola per tennis, scrivo ad Ann e le chiedo se vuole uscire per un caffè: lei accetta, così mi viene a prendere e ci passiamo una bella oretta a chiacchierare come mamma e figlia!

Having the last hour off and not having to stop at school for tennis, I text Ann and ask her if she wants to go out for a coffee: she accepts, so she picks me up and we spend a good hour or so chatting as mum and daughter!

Arrivando a casa molto presto, scrivo alla mia sorellina e facciamo FaceTime: ammetto di aver scattato molti screenshot mentre parlavamo, ma per correttezza non li posterò qui. 

Voglio solo dire che sei la migliore, che non vedo l'ora di stritolarti, e che sei bellissima.

Notizia del giorno: per la domenica di Pasqua, sarò io la chef di famiglia, e cucinerò per 8 invitati!!! Ho messo insieme questo menu, pieno di specialità Italiane particolarmente apprezzate dagli Americani (e da me, ovviamente!)
Non vedo già l'ora, teniamo solo le dita incrociate che tutto vada per il meglio e che la cucina non si trasformi in qualcosa come Hell's Kitchen di Gordon Ramsey!

News of the day: for Sunday Easter, I will be the family chef, and cook for 8 guests!!! I put together this menu, full of Italian specialties that are particularly appreciated by the Americans (and me, of course!).
I'm already looking forward to it, just keep our fingers crossed that everything goes well and that the kitchen does not turn into something like Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen!

Oggi è Saint Patrick, e prepariamo una cena tipica Americo - Irlandese, avendo Dave e Marie come ospiti (amici di Ann e Gary) e giocando in salone dopo mangiato. Auguri a tutti!

Today is Saint Patrick's Day, and we prepare a typical American - Irish dinner, having Dave and Marie as guests (Ann and Gary's friends) and playing in the living room after dinner. Happy Saint Patrick Day to you all!

All'ultima ora, che è buca, non potendo fare i compiti perchè ho lasciato il libro a casa, vado da Starbucks e avverto Ann, così che, se non avesse nulla da fare, potrebbe raggiungermi. Mi risponde che è fuori a pranzo con Bri e Gary, nel ristorante cinese proprio di fianco a Starbucks, e mi vede mentre cammino di fronte alla finestra, così mi apre la porta e mi siedo con loro.

Quando torniamo a casa, vado in macchina con Bri: parliamo e ridiamo, mentre lei aziona la funzione nella macchina che riscalda i nostri sederini (che ad un certo punto quasi vanno a fuoco: che ridere!). Sono contenta di averla vista, perchè ci vediamo sempre di sfuggita, ma mi piace veramente passare del tempo con lei. Una volta a casa, faccio i compiti per circa due ore, poi mi preparo la cena e vorrei andare a fare una passeggiata, ma inizia a nevicare, così mi rintano sotto le coperte sul divano, per guardare un episodio di Grey's Anatomy. 

On the last hour, which is off for me, I can not do my homework because I left the book at home, so I walk to Starbucks and warn Ann, so that, if she has nothing to do, she may join me. She replies that she is out to lunch with Bri and Gary, in the Chinese restaurant right next to Starbucks, and sees me as I walk in front of the window, so she opens the door and lets me sit down with them.

As we go home, I go in the car with Bri: we chat and laugh, while she activates the function in the car that warms our bottoms (which, at one point, are almost on fire: so much fun!). I'm glad to have seen her, because we always see each other in passing, but I really like spending time with her. Once home, I do my homework for about two hours, then I prepare dinner and I would go for a walk, but it starts to snow, so I sit on the couch under the blankets to watch an episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Ooops, fuori nevica, Chiarina non se l'aspettava e una faccia da ebete è la reazione...

La classe che è risultata più difficile dopo il ritorno dalle Hawaii è decisamente quella di AP calculus: i nuovi argomenti sembrano cinese, sopravviverò?!
The class that is hardest to follow after coming back from Hawaii is definitely AP calculus: the new topics seem Chinese, will I survive?!

E... Benvenuti in America, dove uno dei compiti è calcolare il volume di una... banana!

Ps Devo dire che non è facile, perchè bisogna usare formule quadratiche e derivare un integrale definito, ma l'oggetto rende lo sforzo più sopportabile e divertente!

And ... Welcome to America, where one of the assignment is to calculate the volume of a... banana!

Ps I must say that it's not easy, because you have to use quadratic functions and derive a definite integral, but the object makes the effort more bearable and fun!

Oggi la cena è "ognuno prepara per sè", e io, prevedibilmente, mi faccio un bel piatto di pasta al pesto!
Today dinner is "everyone on their own", and I, predictably, prepare some pasta with pesto!

Preparo la cena per Ann e, in particolare, Barbara, che oggi ha fatto la seconda parte delle audizioni e che si merita di mangiare i suoi piatti preferiti dopo un pomeriggio così lungo. Chef Chiara all'opera!
I prepare dinner for Ann and, in particular, Barbara, who today took part in the second part of the auditions, and who deserves to eat her favorite meal after such a long afternoon. Chef Chiara is at work!

GIORNO 10

Primo giorno ufficiale di scuola.

Oggi è un giorno emotivamente forte: incontriamo tutti i professori, ognuno spiega le sue richieste e metodo di insegnamento, conosciamo qualche ragazzo o ragazza americani, pranziamo all'aperto, usiamo gli armadietti per la prima volta, allenamento di Cross Country e... casa dolce casa, alle 5.30 del pomeriggio. 
Ann è partita questa mattina per andare a trovare la sua famiglia, e ha lasciato sotto la porta un biglietto di in bocca al lupo per il primo giorno di scuola. Come ho già detto, è speciale.
Devo mettere a posto la camera perchè tutto è rovesciato sul letto o per terra, e mi dico: "Così non va bene, Chiara!"

DAY 10

First official day of school.

Today it's an emotionally tough day: we meet all the teachers and some american boys and girls, we have lunch outside, we use the lockers for the first time, I do Cross Country and then... home sweet home, at 5.30 pm.
Ann has gone to visit her family, and she left me a postcard under the door to say "good luck": like I said, she's special.
I have to organize my room because it's really messy and everything is on the floor or on the bed, and I say to myself: "Oh no Chiara, it doesn't work like that!"

 Aula di tedesco prima della lezione. Il prof, che sembra davvero simpatico, ha detto che un giorno alla settimana parlerà soltanto tedesco. Ci ha anche parlato di lui e della sua storia: faceva parte dell'esercito tedesco, è venuto qui e ha incontrato la moglie, si sono sposati e si è stabilito qui cambiando la sua professione da militare ad insegnante e allenatore di calcio!

German room before the lesson. The teacher, who seem really nice, said that once a week he'll just speack in German. He also talked about himself and his life: he was part of the German Air Force, he came here, met his wife, they got married and he changed his profession from soldier to teacher and soccer coach!

Qualche volta capita di cedere, e la prima per me è stata oggi, nell'aula di AP Calculus. Mi sono spaventata perchè mi sembrava di non capire niente dei problemi stampati sul foglio, anche se poi a casa "a freddo" mi sono accorta che erano assolutamente fattibili, e mi è venuto quasi da piangere. Capita... Essere exchange students penso voglia dire anche questo: uscire dalla "comfort zone" e mettere alla prova le proprie debolezze.

Sometimes we cede, and it was the first time for me, during AP Calculus. I was scared because I thought that I couldn't understand anything of the printed problems, even if when I came home and I was more relaxed, I realized that they were absolutely feasible, so I was almost crying. It happens... Being an exchange student means also this: come out of the comfort zone and put our fragilities to test.
