Theend

GIORNO 291-292

DAY 291-292

PARTENZA
DEPARTURE

The day has come. Today it’s not only “Day 291-292”, as if it was just normal, like all the ones previous to it. No, today is the day I had marked as the saddest day of my life on the house calendar in the kitchen, and it’s the day I’ve been scared of for a month now, every night in the darkness of my bedroom, when the lights were off and my head was spinning around. This is the kind of day that I have to endure today.

If you have made it so far with me, reading my blog, you probably don’t want to hear a list of all the new experiences I lived this past year, but it is good for me to stop for a second and rewind, traveling a little bit with my memory.

The moment I saw Ann and Gary at the airport is stealing my breath, still now after ten months, because I believe that you can’t control emotions, and I for sure felt blessed from the very first second I saw the wide smiles drew on their mouths. They have welcomed me and embraced me in their family and lives, made this year great, far beyond any expectations, and for this I can’t use just words to express my gratitude.

I think everyone can be grateful for “the big things”: when something huge like a family trip happens, the excitement build up as quickly as the blink of an eye, and Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Wyoming, are marked as “seen” on the list of places to see around the world; but Ann and Gary also woke up at 4 in the morning to take me to the airport to go to Hawaii, doing that just for me, because they were not coming along. Isn’t this a big enough proof of their big, good heart?
As I stated before, I felt an integral part of their family. Of course it’s not been immediate, but we went through a building process that I consider to be just natural: we had to learn the little things, and we built a strong relationship, based on trust and honesty. I learned that if I had some spare time, I could use it to grind some coffee and fill the Keurig cups for Ann, or wash the steak knives and load the dishwasher for Gary, or pick up the newspaper and throw it against the front door when I got out in the morning to go to school, or ask Ann to go out for a mocha, or listen  to Gary explaining me about the new constructions behind the house, or or or…. And I’m aware they did the same with me, because they gave me the perfect bracelet for my birthday, when I had just once briefly mentioned that I loved it, or because I always found kiwis in the fridge, or because they made the house warmer when I was in it, when 5 degrees less would have been perfectly fine with them, or because they always showed interest towards my family back home, asking questions and never seeming bored to listen, or or or…

Barbara has of course been a big part of my year: we’ve done so many things together, and helped and relied on each other 24/7 every single day of our experience. She was firstly a stranger, than a friend, than a best friend, than a sister by choice. We went for walks in the evenings around the neighborhood, sometimes escaping from stray dogs and making fun of each other once safe at home. We went countless times to the Creole restaurant, after working out in the recreation center, always ordering a Gumbo and going out saying that <<It was way too spicy, next time I’ll change>>, without ever really trying something else. We had so many classes together at school, and even an off hour in the first semester, during which we took our time to go out of campus and explore the nearby area. We sometimes kept company to Ann when she was kickboxing, and we enjoyed a cup of coffee (or maybe many more) at Starbucks. And now that I’ve met her parents as well, I am sure our relationship will not end today: it will just have to re-adjust to the distance, and take advantage of the electronic devices more than the face to face. But we have planes, trains, and soon a driving license (we will have to succeed, both of us!): there will always be a way to see each other again, I am sure.

I will miss so many things about this life in Loveland, that no one who hasn’t lived all of this will ever be able to fully understand how I feel right now. I loved the culture, but I had to adjust to it and learn to appreciate it. For example, school is much easier compared to what I’m used to, especially since the load of work to do isn’t nearly as tough nor complicated, but I did love the way teachers approach students here, almost as if they were friends, always there to help and repeat themselves over and over, until we finally got the gist of the concept. Another example: the food. This is honestly the aspect I miss the most about my country, being a cook and foodie myself. Here they serve huge portions and call them a meal, closing any chance that one will be hungry enough to try something different or just a dessert. But I learned to order a starter, a salad, or a side, which were perfectly fine and filling, or, when not available, I kept in mind that a box to take home was always welcomed to ask the waiter (this gesture isn’t considered impolite or rude here, not at all!). And I found unexpected spots around the little towns nearby, that have created the perfect background for the numerous memories I keep in my heart: I always associate food with emotions, well, here I felt strong emotions.
There’s the Italian restaurant in Boulder where I took my family for my birthday dinner, where my best friends Maddalena joined us and spent all the day with me, giving up on one of her last soccer games.
The French Bakery where my dear friend Kathy treated me for breakfast, and the other breakfast place where the same, great woman took me to try the traditional English scones and to live some fun adventures.
The state of art restaurant in Denver where I ended up with Ann on one cold winter day, while wandering around the amazing city, with no schedule nor stress, but lots of joy and curiosity.
The Chinese restaurant where I took Gary for lunch, after seeing him working in the garden for four straight hours in the morning, with his hip hurting but never complaining nor asking for help.
The Italian restaurant where my big group and I went for the Prom dinner, starting it in such a fun way and making it one of the best night of this year.
The list could go on and on, because, as you can probably see, food and myself get along very well, but I think this was enough to conceive the idea of what I mean by the association that I inevitably draw between eating experiences and memories.

I just want to also remember the times I cooked for the entire family, such as the big Easter lunch, when I started cooking on the day before and by the time I was frying something like thirty chicken cotolette, I couldn’t wait for me to be done, and yet I was so happy to see everyone enjoying the meal: that was something pricelessly rewarding. And rewarding was the hug that Barbara gave me every time I prepared carbonara for her, or the smile that Ann showed me every time I baked biscotti for her.

I loved loved loved being a volunteer at the local hospital, getting the chance to interact with patients and learn from their incredible strength and optimism. I loved trying and learning a new sport, tennis, also taking part in the first competitions ever in my life. I loved hearing everyone speak in English, and I loved the challenge I picked up every day, promising myself to give a 100% to listen, understand and answer to what was going on around me. I also loved discovering that my country is so much appreciated here: we Italians should really be more proud of where we come from and do our best to preserve and support Italy, because it is almost impossible to find anything as beautiful as it around the entire world.

Last but not least, I have learned so much about myself, and I consider this one of the most valuable things I will bring home with me: this year has somehow changed me, the person I’ve become is physically very similar to the one who left Italy in August, but “spiritually” so different. I have learned to take life more easily, and enjoy the moment more, because everything goes by so fast, and I will never have the chance to relieve the same exact thing again. I know this may sound what the priest says in church, but it is what I learned, and I don’t want to hide it, but share it with you. Let’s have more fun when we are with company, let’s listen everything people have to tell us, let’s take pictures of everything we like. Because all we need is memories, and we will make them greater every time we will spend even just a few seconds to absorb them in our hearts.

My heart right now is like a bowl made of super thin glass: it is full of America, but Italy is pushing from the outside to come back in.

I just have to be careful and find the right balance.

Day278

GIORNO 278

DAY 278

In the morning I Skype with my family: I love to laugh with my big brother, and I update and make plans with my little sister, I see a jumping dad in the garden, and I feel strong emotions with my mom.
Now I'm ready to start the day.
I help Briana cleaning the house from last night (on the other hand, I have also contributed to create the mess!), then we go to the Orchard Shopping Mall for a couple of hours.
When we get home, we will have a party organized by Ann and Gary, where all the nice people we met during the year join us. Here are some photos stolen from these moments of pure joy:

Thank you Ann, Gary, Bri, Justin, Will, Sara, Joyce, Dennis, Dave, Kathy, Becca, Anna, John, Peggy, Dustin, Kris, and Steven for coming and celebrate with us! I love you all!!

They buy us the best cake ever: classic cheesecake with strawberries. Today the exception to the rule was a must, I still have my mouth watering!!!

Ci hanno scritto tutti un pensiero carino!!
They all wrote us a nice thought!!

I have no words. I knew I was lucky to end up with Ann and Gary, but today they confirmed themselves for the umpteenth time. Thank you for all you do for me constantly, you're the reason why all this is possible and I will never be grateful enough. I love you, you are my family, what I care more than anything in the world.

By the time it's night, I admit I'm tired: give me a bed and goodnight world!

Day272

GIORNO 272
DAY 272

Chiarina ♥"

DOVE: Parco della Giretta, Settimo Milanese
QUANDO: Lunedì 30 Maggio 2016, ore 18:00 - 21:00

Americans, I'm not gonna translate this, because it's about my Italian reunion on the 30th of May in Milan, and I sadly know that nobody will be able to make it out there... This is just the picture I chose for the event!

Today is Monday of my last full week at school: in every class, I have to take a cumulative final exam, but then I will have about two weeks of free time to spend with friends and family, exploring places that I haven't seen yet in Colorful Colorado and, weather permitting, spending the days outdoors, perhaps taking a picnic or laying down on the grass reading and sunbathing. I know I'm lucky and I have done nothing to deserve all this, however, I live with the philosophy of "enjoy it while you can!".

Bella fortuna, Chiara!
I go home walking, and I have to laugh when it starts to rain: it was sunny all day, but I get the only half hour of rain of the day, as I walk while listening to music and bearing my backpack on my shoulders.
But there's more: after ten minutes that I'm at home, the sun comes out again and a rainbow apperars in the sky.
Beautiful luck, Chiara!

Dinner and book for the driving license, outside.
Then Barbara surprises me, asking me in Italian, reading from her cellphone: "Do you want to go for a walk?" Of course! We go out in pajamas and flip flops, but who cares? The sun still shines and we are carefree!!

Then we start dancing on the porch, with a very little sense of rhythm, but lots, lots of fun: these are memories that I'll keep forever!

When it starts getting colder outside, we come back in, and I watch The Voice on the tv, listening to some very good songs (the finale is approaching and the race becomes more competitive and interesting)!

Day256

GIORNO 256
DAY 256

Probably the best day of my year!!

Saliamo in macchina, accompagniamo Maddi a casa, e poi torniamo a Loveland:

I am very tired, and I could choose to just post some pictures here, and leave out the descriptions, but it was such a full and beautiful day that I want to do the "effort" to tell you everything everything, because, between 5, 10, 15 years, I want to go back in time and be able to remember!
After sleeping about 6 hours last night (I was very excited), I wake up at 6:30 am, and the first thing I do is turn on my cell phone. I read all the posts from the people who thought of me and wrote me on this special day for me, and I am moved to the point that I start to cry... After I roll under the blankets for about an hour, I finally decide to get up: Ann will take Barbara to rehearsal, and me to Starbucks, where I will take a good Latte and do Skype with my family.
In the first fifteen minutes, I can not sit still for a moment, and I laugh, because I think that my parents must be desperate, but my excuse is that I'm waiting for the barista to call me for my drink and I have to be ready as soon as I can because I do not want it to be cool (in fact, I might as well wait while sitting down and get up when I hear my name called, but let's leave out the details...). Once I get my coffee in my hands, I can finally "sedate myself" and open the presents that they sent me. Thank you all: as usual, everything is very thought out and perfect for me, you are my joy and serenity, and I love you so very much. But I want to stress that you, Franci, have surprised me once again, with your PERFECT shirt: you are special and you know it, and I also can not wait to spend every day with you again; just give me another month or so here, I still have too many nice things to do, and then I'll be all yours little sister <3 <3 <3
In the last five minutes, I even have the time to greet the grandpa, and I'm very glad he cae in at the right time!!
When we close the call, I walk to the bus stop and I get on the bus to Boulder. When I arrive, the most beautiful day of this year begins, with a tight tight tight hug with Maddi: what gift can ever be better than a day with the best of all friends?!
We go to the farmers market, visit a museum of contemporary art, lie on the grass and sing and dance, visit the university's sports fields, have an outdoor brunch, walk up and down the pedestrian street, treat ourselves to a delicious gelato, tell us everything that comes to our minds, and... we discover to be on the same flight from New York to Milan.
How could I expect to find the friend who completes me so perfectly, at more than 8000 km from home?! Fate, luck, God, call it what you want, I only know that I am forever grateful!! <3 <3
At around five, Ann, Gary, and Barbara join us, and we go to the Italian restaurant "Sforno": Maddie, Ann and I eat the best pizza I've ever tasted here in the US, while Gary has "bucatini gricia" and Barbara a carbonara, all accompanied by warm homemade bread and green sauce. Yum yum yum!!!!!
Then we walk a bit and we stop for a small gelato, because Ann has never tried it yet! We get in the car, we take Maddi home, and then come back to Loveland.
It's now exactly half past eleven in the evening, and I want to close my eyes, but I'm so glad. It's not that I expected to suddenly turn into a wise adult, but I expected that this day was special, and it was, because something magical happened: many, many dear people have written to me, sent me videos, photos, cards in the mail, and gifts, surpassing all my expectations and filling my heart.
THANK YOU to all of you who have made this day memorable, I am grateful <3 <3 <3

Brunch!

Lost in the art...

Favorite moments captured by the camera

Family <3

A hug, a tight one, is the best thing in the world.

Buona notte <3

The last thing I do before turning off the light, is looking at all the pictures taken during the day, and read again the texts and cards: they make me feel much loved, and I care to say that it's with a lot of affection, that I reciprocate all the sweetness! Good night <3

Day228

GIORNO 228
DAY 228

Alarm at 7 am to cook! I write to my mom for the last-minute advice, and then I go downstairs, ready to start!

The first thing I cook is the ragu (marinara sauce with meat): I use a big pot, because the quantities are really huge, and I put it on the stove at 7.30.

I keet stirring every about 20 mins, and every time I lift the lid, the smell of my home invades my nostrils, and I think about my grandpa: I believe that lasagna has always been one of his specialties, and ragu makes me a child again...

Having to wait for about four hours before ragu is complete, I decide to start preparing the dessert: the beloved tiramisu. This time, however, I ask Ann if I can use the mocha ("machine" in the pic) for the coffee, which is therefore stronger and less watered down. She replies "of course", so I the fill it and wait for the coffee to come up. In the meanwhile, I prepare the mascarpone cream, and this time the center of my thoughts is my little sister, who loves tiramisu and always asks my mom to prepare it for her birthdays. Wait a minute, also Barbara loves tiramisu: the fate wants that this dessert is especially appreciated by my sisters!!

And here it is, ready to be eaten tomorrow (unless the guests will be too full for dessert...)

Prossima ricetta: torta pasqualina.
Next recipe: Easter cake (kind of quiche). I wrote down everything I need and need to do, on a piece of paper which was holy for me today, and I completed also this recipe with success!

Then I make lasagna: I was slightly scared for the cheese sauce, because I'd never done it, but my mom, and yes, her again, explains me how to make it well and saves me by telling me to be careful not to leave it too much on the stove because It hardens much sooner than you might think. It's all smooth for foruna, and I am grateful once again! This is the pic of the ready lasagna, that I'll put in the oven tomorrow before dinner!

The adventure in the kitchen today ends at 2:30 pm, but I do not leave the room until 3 pm, because I want to clean all the tools that I used and that I have accumulated in the sink. Once finished, I'm very happy for this day (THANK ANN & GARY!!!), and I feel like going for a walk to Starbucks -- the usual 5 km. Barbara decides to come with me, and I'm happy to share the journey with her! Then Will picks us up, and we go home to make a very American-Easter activity!

Dipingere le uova!
Dye the eggs!

9 pm comes and I'm exhausted: I'll go to bed, good night everyone!

An aggressive Chiara wins the SAT vocabulary competition in the English class and wins her lollipop: good girl

Award for the most fun class of the day: German. Today we spend the 47 minutes class to sing this song, clapping our hands to the beat. It's called "Bache Bache Kuchen", and I can only suggest you devote one minute of your life to listen to it. If you do it, try to imagine the context: high school, Monday morning. That's all.

Studying in Starbucks and lost in my Calculus homework, these two cuties join me and... bye bye assignment!

In the afternoon, I go for a walk and run in the fields, since the sun is shining, there are about 70°F, and I need to blow off steam: it was a long Monday and I'm glad it's evening and it's ending!

Day176

GIORNO 176
DAY 176

-7 dajeee
A daily silly pic for this countdown. -7 come oooon

I'm not saying that waking up at 6.30 am is a pleasure, but being able to see such a dawn is a privilege!

(poco invitanti...)
This morning we cook for the first time: we are divided into groups of four or five people, and each group has its own kitchen. The recipe is for cookies, but each group has a variation: melted butter instead of softened (our case), extra flour, extra baking soda, or just refined sugar (and not brown sugar).
These are examples taken from each group: I did not dare to test them because it was early morning, and the next hour I had anatomy (with the dissection of the cat...), but I took a picture of the results! (Not very appealing...)

Way to go!

During the weight lifting hour, we do a circuit that lasts an hour and a half. We alternate weightlifting to cardio (such as step, jump rope, jumping jacks...), and I'm honored to work with Angelique: we support and we encourage each other, keeping up the goal. Way to go!

Grazie.

We watch an episode of Chicago MED all together, for the first timee, and they seem to appreciate it: I love this 45 minutes of family. Thank you.

Inutile è dire che vado a letto cantando fra me e me "Baby I'm perfect for youuuuuu"

When I take the shower, I listen to the song "Perfect" from One Direction: it is a kind of summer hit, but I like it, and I listen to it again and again for at least 10 times. Needless to say, I go to bed singing to myself, "Baby I'm perfect for youuuuuu"
