1+2: -3 Hawaii!!!!

Oggi è il giorno: Ann mi accompagna, insieme a Barbara, all'Apple Store di Boulder, dove ho preso appuntamento per le 11. Il personale è molto gentile, e io sono affidata ad una ragazza giovane, simpatica e qualificata, che, dopo avermi chiesto quali problemi ho con il mio cellulare, prova a sistemarlo ma il tentativo fallisce. Dopodichè mi dice che controllerà che non ci siano danni provocati dall'acqua (e non ci sono!): a questo punto decide che l'unica soluzione è scambiarmi il telefono con uno nuovo di pacca. Per fortuna avevo fatto un backup su iCloud (salvare tutti i dati, foto, contatti ecc. sulla "nuvola")  il giorno prima che il telefono si bloccasse completamente: dobbiamo quindi importare tutto ciò che era prima sull'altro telefono, su questo nuovo, e il gioco è fatto. Varco la porta di uscita con un sorriso a 32 denti e tirando un sospiro di sollievo!Giusto per curiosità: mentre aspettavamo che il cellulare si aggiornasse, ho chiacchierato con la commessa che mi seguiva. Mi ha spiegato che, per lavorare alla Apple, non devi essere qualificato o avere particolari prerequisiti: devi soltanto essere una persona piacevole e con un bel carattere (lei ha letteralmente detto "You just have to be fun to be around"). Dopodichè, se passi le selezioni, lavorerai in un bellissimo ambiente, dove i colleghi (tantissimi: in un negozio abbastanza limitato, sembrava fossero un esercito) sono gentili e il contratto copre l'assicurazione medica (altrimenti costosissima negli Stati Uniti).

E' stata una bella esperienza, nel complesso!

Today is the day: Annn takes me, along with Barbara, to the Apple Store in Boulder, where I made an appointment for 11 am. The staff is very kind, and I have been entrusted to a young girl, nice and qualified, who, after asking me what problems I have with my cell phone, tries to fix it but the attempt fails. Then she tells me that she will check that there is no water damage (and there is not!): at this point she decides that the only solution is to switch the phone with a brand new one. Luckily, I had made a backup to iCloud on the day before the phone got blocked completely: we must then import on this new phone everything that was firstly  on the broken one, and that's it. I find my way through the exit door with a 32 teeth smile and pulling a sigh of relief!

Just out of curiosity: while we were waiting for the phone to update, I chatted with the girl who was helping me. She explained me that, to work at Apple, you do not have to be qualified or have special prerequisites: you just need to be a nice person and have a good character (she literally said "You just have to be fun to be around"). Then, if you pass the selections, you will work in a beautiful environment, where your colleagues (many: in a quite limited shop, it looked like they were an army) are friendly and the contract covers your medical insurance (otherwise very expensive in the United States).

It was a good experience, overall!

L'unica cosa che ho dovuto comprare è stato il cavo per caricare il telefono, perchè quello che avevo era evidentemente danneggiato.
The only thing that I had to purchase was the cable to charge the cell phone, because the one i had was evidently damaged.

Per cena, chef Gary prepara salmone e costolette di maiale (seguendo la ricetta della mamma di Ann) -- ottimo lavoro -- mentre Barbara prepara dei cookies con gocce di cioccolato, Peggy un'insalata, Mary dei biscotti e Sarah dei cioccolatini al cocco.

For dinner, chef Gary prepares salmon and ribs (following the recipe from Ann's Mom) - great job - while Barbara prepares chocolate chip cookies, Peggy a salad, Mary come cookies and Sarah some coconut chocolates.

Movie "Dirty Granpa" with the other girls from the exchange students group -- Do not go watch it, it's very very groce!

Uno dei camerieri ci porta al tavolo il suo numero di telefono e ci dice di mandargli un sms, che ridere!
One of the waiters brings his phone number to our table and he tells us to send him a text, so fun!

Mentre guidiamo con Ann verso Erie, Barbara cerca una canzone da cantare alle audizioni per il musical della scuola, e ci fa morire dal ridere quando intona "Rolling in the Deep" di Adele. Il ritornello, con i suoi acuti, è decisamente la parte migliore. Grazie Barbara, mi ha fatta quasi piangere dal divertimento!
As we drive toward Erie with Ann, Barbara is looking for a song to sing at the audition for the school musical, and she makes us laugh when she sings "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele. The chorus, with its high notes, is definitely the best part. Thanks Barbara, you made me almost cry from the fun!

Mi ero dimenticata la foto del conto alla rovescia, quindi la aggiungo quando sono a letto, prima di andare a dormire... -5!!

Gary mi ha dato questa sua maglietta da mettere sopra i vestiti quando seziono il gatto, dato che ogni volta schizza da tutte le parti e non è molto piacevole... Grazie!!
Gary gave me this Tshirt to wear over my clothes when I dissect the cat, since it splits everywhere all the time and it's not very pleasant... Thank you!!

Alla base si vedono Angelique e Monika, amiche e compagne di weight lifting. Siamo state insieme nello Student Council sin dall'inizio, ma ora stiamo legando e ogni giorno aspetto l'ora di sollevamento pesi per parlare con loro!
At the bottom, you can see Angelique and Monika, friends and weight lifting classmates. We've been together in the Student Council since the beginning, but now we're bonding and every day I look forward to the weight lifting hour to talk with them!

Prendo un appuntamento all'Apple Store: andrò con Ann domenica mattina, prima del super ball (partita importantissima per il football Americano, e in particolare per Denver, perchè giocano i Broncos).
Passeremo una mattinata insieme, noi due sole, e mi godrò questo tempo con lei prima della partenza per le Hawaii!
I take an appointment at the Apple Store: I'll go with Ann on Sunday morning, before the super ball (very important match for American football, and in particular for Denver, because the Broncos play).
We will spend a morning together, just the two of us, and I'm going to enjoy this time with her before leaving for Hawaii!

Cucino la carbonara per Ann e Gary, che stasera andranno a vedere una commedia a teatro, e poi per Barbara e me: essendo Barbara alla partita di basket per la performance di danza, e non volendola lasciar mangiare da sola, decido di preparare la pasta in due volte e cenare insieme a lei!

I cook pasta carbonara for Ann and Gary, who tonight will go to see a comedy at the theater, and then for Barbara and me: Barbara is at the basketball game for the dance performance, and I don't want her to eat alone, so I decided to prepare the pasta twice and have dinner with her!

-6: Come canticchiava (e magari canta ancora) il caro Lollo: <<Okay, okay, batti un colpo se ci 6!>>!!!!!!!

Oggi metto i jeans dopo mesi di tuta tutti i giorni (o quasi): era ora!

Today I wear my jeans for the first time after months with yoga pants everyday (or so): finally!

Problemi con l'iPhone: dopo giorni in cui non trovava la rete, ho chiamato l'Apple Store e mi hanno incitata a fare l'aggiornamento a iOS 9. Peccato che, non appena collegato al computer, il telefono abbia magicamente smesso di funzionare. Nei prossimi giorni andrò fisicamente in un negozio Apple o cercherò di rimandarlo ad Amazon... Scusate la parola, ma mi sento abbastanza sfigata con i cellulari...
Problems with the iPhone: after days when it could not find the network/service, I called the Apple Store and they incited me to do the upgrade to iOS 9. Too bad: as soon as I connected it to the computer, the phone magically stopped working. In these days I will physically go at an Apple store, or try to send it back to Amazon... I feel pretty unlucky with cellphones...

Nel pomeriggio, volevo davvero fare una sorpresa a Barbara e prepararle una pasta alla carbonara (la sua preferita), ma le lunghe telefonate con 10 persone diverse che lavorano all'Apple, mi hanno letteralmente prosciugata. Dopo svariati tentativi, la conclusione è stata che la mia miglior chance è quella di andare a Boulder (il più vicino Apple Store) e vedere di sistemare la cosa insieme... Vedremo!

In the afternoon, I really wanted to surprise Barbara and prepare a pasta carbonara for her (her favorite), but the long phone calls with10 different people working at Apple literally drained me. After several attempts, the conclusion was that my best chance is to go to Boulder (the nearest Apple Store) and try to fix it together... We'll see!

Dopo cena, Barbara ed io cerchiamo un mazzo di carte, ma, non trovandolo, ed essendo Ann e Gary fuori a cena, ne costruiamo uno ritagliano fogli A4 e scrivendo i numeri e le lettere su ciascuno pezzo. Un bel fine serata giocando a "Golf", gioco di carte che ci ha insegnato Dennis in montagna!

After dinner, Barbara and I look for a deck of cards, but, not finding it, and being Ann and Gary out to dinner, we build one from scratch, cutting some A4 sheets and writing the numbers and letters on each piece. We spend a nice late evening, playing "Golf", a card game that Dennis taught us in the mountains!

Non dico che svegliarsi alle 6 e mezza sia un piacere, ma poter vedere un'alba così è un privilegio!
I'm not saying that waking up at 6.30 am is a pleasure, but being able to see such a dawn is a privilege!

Questa mattina cuciniamo per la prima volta: siamo divisi in gruppi da quattro o cinque persone, e ciascun gruppo ha la propria cucina. La ricetta è quella dei cookies, ma ad ogni gruppo capita una variante: burro sciolto invece che ammorbidito (il nostro caso), extra farina, extra lievito, o solo zucchero raffinato (non di canna).
Questi sono gli esempi portati da ciascun gruppo: non mi azzardo a testarli perchè è prima mattina e l'ora successiva avrò anatomia (con la dissezione del gatto...), ma mi permetto di scattare una foto ai risultati! (poco invitanti...)
This morning we cook for the first time: we are divided into groups of four or five people, and each group has its own kitchen. The recipe is for cookies, but each group has a variation: melted butter instead of softened (our case), extra flour, extra baking soda, or just refined sugar (and not brown sugar).
These are examples taken from each group: I did not dare to test them because it was early morning, and the next hour I had anatomy (with the dissection of the cat...), but I took a picture of the results! (Not very appealing...)

Durante l'ora di sollevamento pesi, facciamo un circuito che dura un'ora e mezza. Alterniamo il sollevamento pesi all'allenamento cardio (tipo step, salto alla corda, jumping jack...), e sono onorata a lavorare con Angelique: ci sosteniamo ed incitiamo a vicenda, tenendo alto l'obiettivo. Way to go!

During the weight lifting hour, we do a circuit that lasts an hour and a half. We alternate weightlifting to cardio (such as step, jump rope, jumping jacks...), and I'm honored to work with Angelique: we support and we encourage each other, keeping up the goal. Way to go!

Guardiamo un episodio di Chicago MED tutti insieme, per la prima volta, e sembra piacere anche a loro: mi godo questi 45 minuti di famiglia. Grazie.

We watch an episode of Chicago MED all together, for the first timee, and they seem to appreciate it: I love this 45 minutes of family. Thank you.

Quando faccio la doccia ascolto la canzone "Perfecct" degli One Direction: è una specie di tormentone, che però mi piace, e la riascolto per almento altre 10 volte. Inutile è dire che vado a letto cantando fra me e me "Baby I'm perfect for youuuuuu"

When I take the shower, I listen to the song "Perfect" from One Direction: it is a kind of summer hit, but I like it, and I listen to it again and again for at least 10 times. Needless to say, I go to bed singing to myself, "Baby I'm perfect for youuuuuu"

Alle cinque del mattino suona il telefono: la scuola rimane chiusa per la neve!
At five am, the phone rings: school stays closed for the snow!

Colazione con calma: pane e marmellata, arancia, kiwi e caffè e latte. E' stato uno dei momenti più rilassati in questi giorni: sorseggiare il caffè di fronte ad un paesaggio così imbiancato non ha prezzo.
Leisurely breakfast: bread and jam, orange, kiwi and latte. It's been one of the most relaxed moment in these days: sipping my coffee in front of such a whitened landscape is priceless.

Ore 9: mi cambio, mi "attrezzo" per la neve e vado ad aiutare Gary a spalare la neve. Finito con lui, mi sposto da Dustin, e spaliamo insieme anche il suo driveway (è il minimo che potessi fare, data la sua gentilezza...). 

E' un'ora e mezza intensa, ma produttiva!

9 am: I change my clothes, I prepare for the snow and go to help Gary shoveling the snow. As soon as I'm done with him, I go to Dustin's, and we also shovel his driveway together (it's the least I could have done, given his kindness...)!

It is an intense but productive hour and a half!

Dopo pranzo, Ann, Barbara ed io andiamo a leggere in un bar a Berthoud. Inizialmente siamo bloccati nella neve che si è accumulata sulla strada immediatamente di fronte a casa, ma Gary ci soccorre, fa ripartire la macchina e, una volta che raggiungiamo la strada principale, siamo salve e raggiungiamo la destinazione. 

Ann,distratta perchè ci sta dicendo che una delle ultime volte in cui era in questo bar, il sole splendeva e faceva caldo, entra nella porta sbagliata, in un ufficio. Scoppiamo a ridere, e, divertite, ordiniamo la nostra mocha, mentre Barbara un Chai Tea. A proposito di Barbara, ci fa divertire anche lei, quando, mentre sta schiacciando la sua tazza di carta per far uscire il vapore, il tappo esplode e con esso il the! Good job!

After lunch, Ann, Barbara and I go to read in a cafe in Berthoud. Initially, we're stuck in the snow that has accumulated on the road immediately in front of the house, but Gary comes to our aid, restarts the car and, once we reach the main street, we are safe and reach the destination. 

Ann, distracted because she's telling us that one of the last times was in this cafe, the sun was shining and it was warm, enters the wrong door, in an office. We burst out laughing, and, amused, we order our mocha, while Barbara a Chai Tea. Speaking of Barbara, she is fun too, when, while crushing her paper cup to let the steam out, the lid explodes and with it the tea! Good job!

E ora, dopo settimane di attesa, posso annunciare ed iniziare il conto alla rovescia per la vacanza più eccitante che potessi ricevere: andare alle Hawaii!!

Parteciperò a questa vacanza organizzata per gli exchange students da questa associazione (qui il programma: http://explore-america.com/explorer/hawaii/index.html), dove fra l'altro incontrerò Matteo dal Vittorio Veneto (la nostra "amata" scuola) e Tirill, ragazza norvegese ospitata a Denver.

Mi sembra di vivere un sogno!!!

And now, after weeks of waiting, I can announce and start the countdown to the most exciting holiday that I could have been given: going to Hawaii!!

I will participate in this holiday organized for exchange students from this association (here is the program: http://explore-america.com/explorer/hawaii/index.html), where, among other things, I'll meet Matteo from my "beloved" school in Milan, and Tirill, Norwegian girl hosted in Denver. 

I seem to be living in a dream!!!

Cinque minuti pprima della fine della giornata a scuola, viene fatto un annuncio radiofonico, in cui si dice che tutte le attività sportive sono annullate a causa della neve fitta. Yuppy!
Five minutes before the end of the school day, a radio announcement is done, and it says that all the athletic practices are canceled because of the thick snow. Yuppy!

Queste sono le giornate in cui apprezzo particolarmente essere a casa, al calduccio, e guardare il paesaggio innevato fuori dalla finestra! Casa dolce casa...
These are the days in which I particularly appreciate being at home, with warmth and coziness, watching the snowy landscape outside the window! Home sweet home...
